My Experience as an Educator

Hi! My name is Shelayah (shuh-lay-uh), and I’m a passionate substitute math teacher with over 5 years of experience helping students build confidence and succeed in math, reading, and writing. I’ve worked with students from elementary through high school, and I’ve seen firsthand how frustration in subjects like math can affect a student’s confidence. That’s why my focus goes beyond just teaching the material—I aim to create a supportive space where students feel comfortable, capable, and encouraged to grow. Hence why I created a summer program like Brain Builders. I hold a bachelor's degree in Computer Science and am ESL certified, which allows me to support a wide range of learners. Through my years of experiences I've supported students through: OnYourMark Education, Amplify, Ignite Reading, Tutor.com, Varsity Tutors, and private tutoring, I’ve helped students strengthen their skills, improve academically, and gain confidence in their abilities. My teaching style is structured, patient, and interactive. I believe learning should feel engaging—not overwhelming—and that every student deserves the support they need to succeed. I’m truly passionate about helping students not just improve in school, but feel confident in themselves again.
